Wyllie Scholarship Program

As a result of the generosity of Margaret Jones Wyllie, Sweet Briar Class of 1945, Sweet Briar is able to offer merit scholarships to up to 10 incoming students each year who have an interest in majoring in engineering. The awards are worth up to $5,000/year and are renewable for each of a student’s four years at the College, as long as she maintains appropriate academic progress and pursues either an engineering science or engineering management major. Students who are selected as Wyllie Scholars will also receive travel support to attend a national or regional engineering conference with a program faculty member.

Selection Criteria

Scholarship decisions are based on a student's overall academic record, with particular attention paid to her grade-point average and standardized test scores. The essays written as part of the scholarship application and the student’s interest in engineering also carry significant weight.

Application Process

To apply, students must submit the Wyllie scholarship application, including responses to both essay topics. Students are encouraged to submit the application for admission and the Wyllie scholarship at the same time. A teacher recommendation is required as part of the scholarship application process. The teacher recommendation submitted with the application for admission may be used or you may submit a separate teacher recommendation from someone who can speak specifically to your background and interest in engineering. The official high school transcript and standardized test scores submitted with the application for admission will be used for the scholarship process.

Students who submit the Wyllie Scholarship application at the same time as the application for admission may receive notification about being named a Wyllie Scholar at the same time she learns of admission.

Deadline

The scholarship application deadline is February 1, but students are encouraged to submit both the Wyllie Scholarship application at the same time she submits her application for admission. Applications submitted after February 1 will be considered on a scholarship-available basis.
