How to apply if you are a

Turning Point Program

The Sweet Briar Turning Point Program is designed for women who are least 24 years of age or who have been out of formal education for at least 4 years.  Sweet Briar is committed to helping women of nontraditional college age begin or continue their college education in a supportive and stimulating environment. While admission to Sweet Briar is competitive, we recognize that students who will be applying as Turning Point students have had interesting life paths.  We seek intelligent women with diverse backgrounds, talents, interests, and experiences, who want to pursue a challenging education within a close-knit community.  Sweet Briar celebrates your life experiences by offering Turning Point Students scholarships based on both academic performance and special talents.

Application Requirements

Before applying as a Turning Point student, we strongly recommend communicating (via telephone or email) with our Turning Point Coordinator (Abigail Hall), who will work with you individually throughout the application process.

We have two separate application deadlines.  For women who wish to begin in the Fall Semester (August), the deadline is July 1.  For women who wish to begin in the Spring Semester (January), the deadline is November 1.

Required credentials for Turning Point Students may include:

  • Completed application form
  • Essay
  • $40 non-refundable application fee.  (Checks should be made payable to Sweet Briar College.)
  • Official high school transcript or GED test results
  • Two letters of recommendation (one from an academic source, if possible)
  • Official SAT I or ACT scores

If you have been enrolled as a degree-seeking student at another institution, we may also require:

  • Transfer Statement (explaining both why you wish to transfer schools and why you have chosen Sweet Briar)
  • Official transcript(s) of all college work

An interview with the Turning Point Coordinator is strongly encouraged, but not required.

The Committee on Admissions selects applicants who present evidence of a strong academic foundation, intellectual ability and motivation, and strength of character.  While it is not possible for us to simply waive all admission requirements in lieu of life experiences -- we do need to have some sort of academic information on which to base an admissions decision -- we will work with you to determine how best to demonstrate your academic readiness to enroll at Sweet Briar College.

Please contact us as you explore Sweet Briar College so we can work with you to make your college degree a reality!
