Jill E. Gavitt '97Assistant Director of Admissions/Special Programs![]() jgavitt@sbc.edu Hometown: Exeter, RI Recruitment Areas: North Carolina (undergraduate) Additional/Special recruitment responsibilities: I work with all candidates interested in Sweet Briar's graduate programs in education. I also work as a recruiter with the two Study Abroad programs - Junior Year in France (JYF) and Junior Year in Spain (JYS). Sweet Briar operates a program in Paris, France as well as one in Seville, Spain. Educational background: I graduated from Sweet Briar in 1997 with a major in Spanish, a minor in Dance Performance, and a K-6 Teaching License. A few thoughts on Sweet Briar's graduate program in education: When I graduated from SBC with my teaching license, which was completed in four years back then, I thought the program was already amazing. The faculty had so thoroughly educated me on what to expect in the classroom, how to handle myself, and, above all, how to teach. How could it improve? Now I know. The MAT program allows students one more year so they can concentrate even more intensely on their teaching preparation and they finish with a master's degree - which, in most districts, means an immediate increase in pay! The M.Ed. program reaches out to local schools to offer teachers a graduate program in their own backyard, and a program that fits their schedule. The focus of our program is Differentiation, learning how to tailor each lesson to fit the needs and readiness levels of each individual student. Differentiation works for all teachers, regardless of subject area or grade level. The thing I think works best for our program is that the MAT students are in class with the M.Ed. students. There is such a great collaboration that occurs when teacher-candidates work with experienced teachers, everyone benefits! But the real winners? The lucky students of our teachers. |
