From its founding Sweet Briar College was a vanguard institution, being the first college for women to combine then traditional collegiate studies with applied coursework. Theory would be reinforced with practice, giving students a holistic and practical understanding of their studies. Students “did” their disciplines. While this approach to teaching and learning is now the best practice of our finest colleges and universities, this early dedication to student learning has remained a hallmark of a Sweet Briar education.

When all is said and done, the reason one goes to college is to receive an education, and Sweet Briar continues to lead the way among American colleges and universities in providing the very best education to its students. This is why we were selected as a "Project DEEP [Defining Effective Educational Practices]" school, a group of 20 institutions identified as national models of excellence in higher education.

Sweet Briar's faculty are nationally recognized scholars, writers, scientists, authors and artists. The College has continued to uphold its founding principles of learning through practice, and our faculty of teacher-practitioners model this philosophy on a daily basis as they mentor each student.

This close bond between faculty and students is at the heart of a Sweet Briar education. It is one of the reasons Sweet Briar is the only college in the nation to appear in all four of the academic top-20 lists in the 2010 Princeton Review: Best Classroom Experience, Professors Get High Marks, Classroom Discussions Encouraged and Most Accessible Professors.
